It’s often really difficult to be an outgoing social person if it just doesn’t come naturally to you. If you’re an introvert you’ll often dislike attending functions with a lot of people you don’t know. You probably like spending time alone or with small groups of people you know and the thought of being in a large networking event with strangers can feel scary. But when you run your own business you’ll need to get out of your comfort zone and network network network as the marketing gurus keep advising you to do.
Here are five tips on how introverts can handle the networking aspect of their business:
1. When you’re invited to a networking event check to see if anyone else you know has also been invited and go along with them.
2. Your elevator speech is one or two sentences that describes what you and your business does in a nutshell. Make sure you prepare your elevator speech beforehand and your unique selling points so you don’t have to think on your feet.
3. Look for the smaller groups with only two to four people to join in with rather than the larger groups.
4. Make an effort to add to the conversation. It’s great to be a good listener but if you don’t volunteer any information about yourself or your business you won’t leave any impression and people will forget about you.
5. Prepare yourself in advance. Make sure you have a list of the other attendees beforehand and do some research on them or their organisations this can help you break the ice and talk knowledgeably about them. Remember people love talking to people who show an interest in them.
